6th Edition--December 28, 2011

The Walkerly Reader, Edition Six
Dear Fans of the Recall Walker saga,
Imagine you’re in an airplane counting on the pilot to bring you in for a safe landing………………
Here’s the deal.  Our airplane is communicating with the control tower for a safe and smooth landing.  The airport landing strip is just a few miles ahead.  Our awesome coordinator, Kaeleen Ringberg, told me this afternoon that we now have collected 6,400 signatures. If we collect another 600 we will reach 7,000, which is double our original goal of 3,500.  That’s double our goal, fans.  Double…..  Just think about reaching that number!
She also told me that our region (Ashland, Bayfield, Douglas, Iron & Sawyer Counties) is leading the northern half of Wisconsin in meeting the new goals that were assigned on December 15 – she was given 3900 more signatures for her 5- county area, and we are 72% of the way there!  The other closest region to ours is the Wausau region that has met 42% of its new goal.
Your incredible enthusiasm, perseverance, and understanding of what is at stake has carried us this far.  Read below about four things you can do to help us come in for the perfect landing.
But first, a message from our pilot (Kaeleen):
“I am still confident that we can get another 800 by New Years! Would it be great going into 2012 with our goal officially doubled!  Please, bring in your sheets, even if there are only a few names. Every signature counts. We are also looking at having to close the office next week if people don’t volunteer, so any extra time you may have to volunteer will be essential in our FINAL push!  We are also going to need to expand
our visibility and need volunteers to do another drive in, stand in front of Penny's and make sure we have every signature possible. I was in the Coop the other day and got two new signatures in the check out line!

“I know it has been a long haul, but we are almost there and cannot lose steam! We cannot assume that we have enough or that our work here is done. We must continue to work as hard as we can for we only get one shot at this folks and we don't want to fall short!
            “Solidarity!  - Kaeleen  715-209-6182 (cell) “
Four things you can do to bring us in for the perfect landing. (And we are definitely flying…)
1. Sit in the Office.  Why?  Because we are steadily bringing in people to sign – just today we brought in 100 signatures because people are also coming in to turn in their petitions.  Why?  Because we have updates lists of Dems to call to make sure everyone has signed.  Why?  Because many calls have been made and people count on us being open - office hours (M-F, 9 to 7, and Sat and Sun, 10 to 6).  EVERY VOTE COUNTS.  Why?  Because people have counted on us to be there, and the word has gotten around everywhere that we have an office and people can go in and sign.  Why?  Because this is where petitions must be turned in by the hundreds of people who took them out to get signatures.  Why?  Because we know our best volunteers will want to pick up one more petition and take it somewhere….
2. Turn in your Petitions.  Why?  (See #1)
3. Take a StandWe’re it!  Call up a buddy and go stand somewhere.  Stand in front of Penney’s (Kaeleen says the downtown is bustling this week).  Stand in front of a P.O.  Or the Co-op.  Or inside where you are allowed.  Have a cup of coffee somewhere and lay your petition on the table, and ask as people go by if they’ve signed..  Say to yourself, “I can get two or three or four or six more signatures on my petition,” or whatever it takes.  If your neighborhood still has people who haven’t signed, knock on their doors.  Organize a drive-through.  Set up a sign and table somewhere and let us know what happened.
4. Some suggestions on how to leverage your contribution.  Call the office or Kaeleen today and volunteer. Maybe a few of you brave souls would be willing to take responsibility for finding people for one or two days.    Kaeleen is able to open the office everyday, and we have someone with a key who knows how to close it at the end of the day.  As of tonight, this is what we need:
Friday: Dec 30We need volunteers 9 to 7.  We have one new volunteer signed       up from 9 to 12, but she needs someone with experience to explain things to her..
Saturday, December 31 – We need volunteers during the day.  Kaeleen will be        there, but we need others..
Sunday, Jan 1 – the office is closed.  Happy New Year!
Monday, Jan 2 – We need volunteers 9 to 11, and 1 to 7.  Elaine von Fang is            there 11 to 1
Tuesday, Jan 3 – We need volunteers 12 to 4.  Jim & Millie O’Leary have     volunteered for 9-12.  And Jennifer Zienty from 4 to 7
Wednesday, Jan. 4 – We need volunteers 9 to 7 Noone has signed up yet.
Thursday, Jan. 5 – We need volunteers 9 to 4.  Darlene Neff & Denise Tar are         signed up for 4 to 7
Friday, Jan. 6 – We need volunteers 9 to 7.  Noone has signed up yet.
All petitions should be in by Jan. 6, so if circulators need to change anything,
They will have 4 days to do so.
Saturday, Jan. 7 – We need volunteers 10 to 6.  Noone has signed up yet.
Sunday, Jan. 8 – We need volunteers 10 to 6.  Noone has signed up yet.
Monday, Jan. 9 – We need volunteers 9 to 7.  Noone has signed up yet.
Tuesday, Jan. 10 –PETITIONS MUST BE MAILED TO MADISON!!
WED, JAN 11 – PERFECT LANDING.  NW WISCONSIN MAKES HISTORY!

One short story from this week:
Six of us went out to help Luis Salas go door-to-door in Bad River.  It was icy and cold, but we came back to the office with 77 more signatures!  Because half of the residents weren’t home, there are still many more to gather in Bad River.  Who would like to help sit inside the store at the Casino’s gas station location?  It’s warm there.
That’s it for this week’s Walkerly Reader, fans.  Until next week, when we will be looking out the airplane windows at our perfect landing………..

5th Edition--December 22, 2011

December 22, 2011Walkerly Reader, Edition Five
Hey Fans!  We have met Robert Arquette’s challenge of 6,000 signatures in record time!  Our fearless leader, Kaeleen Ringberg, has issued a new challenge…
Editor’s Note:  When Ashland and Bayfield Counties met their goal on December 2, of 3500 signatures (1/4 of the voters who had voted in the last election), Robert Arquette, the Bayfield County Coordinator for United Wisconsin, issued us all a challenge that we could reach for 6,000 signatures.  Well, in two and a half weeks, you did just that.  Thanks to the many efforts of those who went door-to-door in Washburn, Ashland, Bad River and Red Cliff, to those who sponsored drive-throughs throughout our two counties, to those of you who stood out in the cold, and carried the petitions under your arms to holiday events, and to all others of you who did whatever you could to give ourselves a very fine Christmas present.  Now Kaeleen is asking us to go for another 1,000 by New Year’s.
 Message from Kaeleen Ringberg:
Good Evening folks! I am proudly announcing that we have officially
sent out over 6,000 signatures from the Ashland Office! This is an
amazing feat everyone and I am so incredibly proud of everyone
involved, whether you have gotten 2 signatures or 200 or simply signed
your self, you have all helped make history in recalling Scott Walker.
Madison has taken notice of us up here in the Northwoods. Douglas
county is leading the state in per capita signatures and the Cheq Bay
is not far behind! I am now issuing a challenge: CAN WE GET 1,000
SIGNATURES BY NEW YEARS?

I think we can. I know we can. Lets ring in the new year with 7,000
signatures under our belt. How will we do this? Make sure all your
friends and family have signed. Get your petitions to the office, If
you can't make it to the office, I will be available to do coordinated
pick ups and so will others. If you want to volunteer, this will be a
busy couple of days at the post office, and the roads will be busy
early in the week for stop and drive activity. Keep up the good work!

Solidarity!,
Kaeleen Ringberg
Message from Kathy Tenney, Ashland office coordinator
Greetings Friends and Coworkers.

As most of you all know we've been doing great with the amount of signatures we've taken in for our two counties.  A lot of folks have worked hard and tirelessly for this to happen.  Special thanks go out to Kaeleen Ringberg for her lovely spirit, steadfast energy, direction and committment to this process.  I've but in a lot of hours these past several weeks and enjoyed every minute of it.  I regret to say that because of health reasons I need to back out of my role in the office and the hours I hoped I would continue to put in in the coming weeks.  I had signed up for Mon thru Fri morning hours 9 to 12. We need others to step forward to fill this time slot starting on December 26th. on. I will still be in at times and pick up limited hours when no one else can, as I am able.  I'll miss you guys and the satisfaction of doing this crucial work.  Warm regards and Happy Holidays to all.
Onward and Upward,
Kathy Tenney

Last night I turned in 165 signatures collected mainly in Red Cliff this last weekend, (and some from Mad Island/Bayfield area as well) There were even more that others turned in. Huge support for the recall in our area!!!!!!!  GREAT WORK PEOPLE
Robert Arquette wrote:
folks,
ya done well!
We got at least 60 signatures today. considering how many people have already signed and that there are approximately 510 people who would sign in Russell this is excellent. > 10% in one day, one event.
Please forward this on to anyone i may have missed and/or anyone you think would like to know.
Many thanx to everyone who contributed, everyone who encouraged/supported us.
 Onward! to 720,000 sigs!

4th Edition--December 12, 2011

December 12,  2011  Walkerly Reader,  Edition Four

We have gathered 5,000 signatures!
Kaeleen Ringberg reports that with the 100 signatures gathered during the blitz of Bad River this past Sunday, and the signatures turned in from the Ashland blitz, and Ashland and Bayfield County efforts, we have now turned in 5,000 signatures.  This is an amazing count that shows the sentiment that is felt by people who live in our area and are affected by Scott Walker’s policies.  Many thanks to all of you who have worked so hard to date.  Special thanks to Wendy Kloiber and the many volunteers for the Ashland door-to-door blitz on Saturday, and Luis Salas and Sandy Bender for the Bad River blitz on Sunday.   And we’re not through!  There will be a blitz in Red Cliff this Saturday.  Contact Robert Arquette at 715-292-8030 if you would like to help out with that important effort.
So, just to review our amazing progress: by December 2 we had reached our goal of 3500, and in the past 10 days, we have added another 1500 to that total.  This means, instead of the 25% of the signatures required from the last election needed to recall Walker, we are at 36% of that vote.  Now we are aiming for 40-42% of the vote.  We think we can make it with your help.

“Total Recall” push this Saturday, December 17!
As part of a statewide push to get out the most votes possible, most towns and cities in the State will sponsor “Total Recall” events this Saturday, December 17.  In our Ashland/Bayfield County region we will have 5 drive-through events coordinated by  Bev Patterson (715-413-0576), a Door-to-Door Blitz in Red Cliff organized by Bayfield County Coordinator Robert Arquette, and all-day open hours at our Office at 316 W. Main Street in Ashland (1-715-817-6567).  You can help out with any of these efforts, and your help will move us towards our 5500 goal for this week!!!.

“Rations and Recalls”,  (drive thru petition signing and food pantry donations)
>From Bev 12/11/2011
We now have 5 sites, possibly 6, for Saturday, December 17 from 11  am - 1 PM.  Press releases were sent to Duluth TV Stations, radio stations and the Ashland Daily Press.  There may also be an ad in the Press and a press release will be sent to the County Journal in Washburn.  Next Saturday is United Wisconsin's Total Recall campaign, so this will fit right in.
We need volunteers, especially in Ashland for Maslowski Beach (by the Artesian Well) and Bayview Park.  We could use a few more for the scenic drive thru west of the band shell in Ashland.  Washburn volunteers will be between the IGA and DQ on Hwy 13, and others at the bus stop in Red Cliff across from the Adm. building.
This is a dual purpose campaign on Saturday.  The drive thru volunteers should have both clipboards with petitions, and bags for accepting non perishable food donations.  Rec Cliff and Washburn may have their own food pantries.  Ashland's will go to the Brick, but we won't name them as we don't want to imply they are supporting the recall efforts.  Please have signage to direct drivers if you are a team leader.  I will cover signs for the scenic drive thru in Ashland.  There are a couple at the Ashland office that could be borrowed.  Joe Groshek will be team leading in Washburn and Red Cliff, Bev will team lead at the scenic drive thru.  Need team leaders for the Maslowski Beach and Bayview Park sites.  Will let you know further about a possible site on the other side of Hwy 2, if I get the OK.  Team leaders will need to arrange the drop off of food donations, Ashland sites can arrange with Bev, or drop off at the Recall office and we will get them delivered on the following Monday.

Contact Bev, 715-413-0576 for more info.

In addition to these drive-throughs, please bring in a friend to our office at 316 W. Main Street, Ashland, and sign a petition there between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Volunteers needed in the Office
We have learned during our canvassing this past weekend, that everyone out there in the community seems to know that we have an Office with regular office hours where they and others can go and sign a petition 7 days a week.  We are bringing in a steady 10-20 signatures every single day.  It is important that we stay open as advertised (9 am to 7 pm, M-F, and 10 am to 6 pm Sat and Sun.  WE NEED YOU TO STEP UP AND TAKE A COUPLE OF HOURS.  Especially if you have circulated a petition and know what that’s about.  Call the Office at 1-715-817-6567 to sign up, or sign up on our website at http://cheqbayrecall.weebly.com/can-you-volunteer-in-the-office.html

Calling in All Petitions!
The top priority in our efforts after between December 17 and the New Year is to return all petitions you have to the Office at 316 W. Main Street in Ashland.  You may turn in any sheets that are correctly filled out.  TURN IN YOUR PETITIONS WHETHER THE SHEET IS FULL OR NOT.  Please remember, every vote counts, and as circulators, the people who signed your petition are depending on you to turn in their names!  You must return all petitions to the Office by January 6 at the latest, and preferably before Jan. 1.  We will need to verify your sheets, and if there are errors, they will have to be sent back to you for corrections.  It is best that you bring your petitions into the Office and have someone go through each page and verify the accuracy of all entries.  Be sure to sign your name at the bottom, with the date you turn the petition(s) in.

Finally,
There is no Kitchen Cabinet Meeting this Wednesday (for core volunteers.)  Stay posted for further updates, however.

Okay, fans, that’s it for this busy and productive week!  Until next week, this is your Walkerly Reader Editor/Volunteer signing out, Mary Rehwald.  715-682-4662.

The Score…4377 and still counting….
This past Friday was a great day for us.  - we actually met the full campaign goal for Ashland and Bayfield Counties of 3500 on December 2 – those signatures came in after just18 days, so we averaged 194 signatures per day, and we are still bringing in close to those averages.  Then on Decembere 6 (today) our total moved 450 more signatures up to a total of 4377 petitions for Governor Walker!  Yes, fans, that’s another 450 signatures in just 3 days.  Are we rocking or what?  (We don’t have the total for Rebecca Kleifisch)The number of signatures surged over the past week, due in part to all of your various good efforts. especially the door-to-door Washburn effort that generated 220 signatures alone.    EVERY SIGNATURE COUNTS.  CARRY THOSE CLIPBOARDS UNDER YOUR ARMS WHEREVER YOU GO, AND IF YOU WEAR THE RECALL WALKER: ASK ME HOW BUTTON, YOU WILL CONTINUE TO FILL UP YOUR PETITION SHEETS DAY AFTER DAY.  WE HAVE JUST OVER 30 DAYS LEFT TO TURN IN ALL YOUR PETITIONS.  (We would like them returned to the Office by January 6, so we can add them up and send our last mailing to the Madison office on January 10 before the January 17 statewide deadline.
Robert Arquette, our Bayfield County Coordinator, is challenging us to reach a goal of 6,000 signatures for Ashland and Bayfield Counties.  Can we make it?  I know we’ll get the bronze or silver from the look of things right now, but, hey, LET’S GO FOR THE GOLD!!!   So the next announcement is a big one, too.

What’s Working…

The Washburn blitz last Saturday was a door-to-door success.  Here is a report from Colleen Geisen who was the lead organizer:
“Hi.  All in all we gathered about 220 signatures today!  I turned in 189 today and the rest will be turned in my individuals later that were still working the doors (including mine).  Thanks for the voter id info. Deb.  There were some handed out.  And Becky was going to mail someone a copy that requested some info. and she didn't have any left.  So, it was helpful.  The extras of everything is in a box for Wendy at the Ashland office.  Wendy Kloiber and I talked today and she knows all the details from the day and has the list of what to work with, what went well etc.  Many many people had already signed in  Washburn today, few said no, but politely for the most part.  One angry phone call tonight at my home, (but I hung up).  We had about 28 volunteers and great comraderie today! I'm glad we did it.  It seems like it was a lot of work for 220 signatures, but I think it's just cool to have done everything in Washburn and to know we covered the city well!

Other things that have been working (send your stories to mary.rehwald@gmail.com and she will put them in next week’s Walkerly Reader):  Jim Oakley switches from the Post Office to the Library.  Jo Bailey and her team have frequented the Post Office steps.  Mary Rehwald recommends carrying your petition wherever you go and asking people you pass on the street – daily successes, including one doctor’s visit where she captured 10 in the waiting room.  The Washburn door-to-door Blitz on December 3 was very successful – 220 signatures were collected by a hardy group of 28 volunteers.  And thank you so much to everyone patiently waiting with big signs at town dumps, in front of stores, gas stations, and grocery stores.
We have a new Office Coordinator!  Kathy Tenney has stepped forward to be our new Office Coordinator.  Here is her message:  “Hi folks, here is a description of what my role in the office has evolved into.  As many of the roles/cross over roles are, mine is not typical of what one might think an office coordinator does.  Mine has evolved as to what’s needed as we go along, what I can and can't do.  I set the office up spatially and created work stations bringing in tables and chairs from my studio.  I'm there at least six days a week from around noon to 5 or later as needed.  I know how to and do many of the tasks.  Others tasks I don't do at all.  I delegate them to others who do know how and want to do them.  Sounds chaotic and sometimes it is, but all in all it works very well, and things run smoothly.  I work well and enjoy an environment with dynamics such as we have.  Folks step up and things are getting done, cooperatively, carefully, thoughtfully and timely. Volunteers coming in for the first time are given special and patient attention. We still need someone as a volunteer coordinator.  I'm thinking this role could work well if a group of folks took it on together.  Mary has gathered and is creating lists of people who want to help and the list is long. So we need someone or a small group to take on this task ASAP.  Please step up.  The task is too much for me, Mary, Kaeleen, or the few others who are have taken on roles.  So again, please step up if you can. Call Mary Rehwald if you want to do this (715-682-4662). Were a little over half way done and we are doing great, the numbers are better than expected and the volunteers are highly motivated to keep it up until Jan 6 when all petitions must be back in the office.  We mail the final ones out from Ashland January 10. I really look forward to meeting those of you if I haven't already.  What a great group of folks we all are.
Onward and upward,
Respectfully,  Kathy Tenney”  (office # 715-817-6567)
5. Fundraising!
We are seeking donations to keep our office open through the Recall Election.  Are there 20 of you out there that can commit $35 a month until the election takes place?  This would pay for our $700/month expenses to keep it open.  Two have stepped forward – ir there are others, please call the office and let them know.  We currently have just over $1,000 in our account and have the office rent  paid through January 11.
We encourage people to contribute to our efforts – this is a grassroots effort, and expenses for supplies add up quickly.  We have set up a fundraising donation can in the Office.  Anyone who donates $10 or more should tell us your address. If you donate more than $100, we will need to know other information.  Call the Office (715-817-6567) for requirements.  Checks should be made payable to the Chequamegon Bay Committee to Recall Walker.  Our mailing address is: Walker Recall Office, 316 W. Main St., Ashland, WI 54806   THANK YOU CONTRIBUTORS.  Every dollar counts.  Every vote counts.

 “Was the Night Before Recall”
 by Steven P. Senski
‘Twas the night before Recall, and all through the state
Of Wisconsin were voters who scarcely could wait

The papers were Xeroxed and readied with care
In fond hopes of the signatures soon to be there

The children were slumbering, home safely from schools
Which were gutted and cut by Republican “tools“

With our “Recall Scott Walker” sign sunk in our lawn
My wife and I planned to arise with the dawn

And set out, door to door, to those neighbors we knew
Who were just as disgusted at Scooter and Crew

When down from the street there arose such a blast
I thought, Lord, what new hell has the GOP passed?

The November air, once so chilly and quiet
Was filled with excitement; could it be a riot?

A storm, it was breaking; not one from the sky
But a groundswell that rose with a hue and a cry

When what to my wondering eye appear’d thence
But a figure in black from a century hence

He marched with a fist raised in manner defiant
While his workers upon ev’ry word were reliant

“On Wausau! On Oshkosh! On Point and Milwaukee!
On Kenosha and Ashland! Yes, you too, Pewaukee!

To each office and home, till you reach one and all.
Now sign away, sign away, sign to Recall!”

They came from their neighborhoods, came from their jobs,
They came, though reviled as thugs and as slobs

They came from Menasha, Monona and Merrill
They came, for they knew that their state was in peril

There were Waukesha folk, not a lot, it was plain
But they worked with resolve like their county was Dane

Now who was their leader, this fiery speaker
Who roused them when they should grow sullen or weaker?

His clothes were familiar, his stance, it was steel’d
But the night kept his features being revealed

I awaited the point when mayhap we would meet
As he solemnly marched up my once-sleepy street

Then…a turn! Now a streetlamp! Epiphany in light!
And we saw Bob La Follette returned for the fight!

This was no fragile ghost, but substantial in power
That grew from his minions, was fed by the hour

And at last I could see, and with joy understand
That the Progressive Spirit returned to our land

Then our gaze finally met, dear old Bob’s and my own
And for one beat in time, we were two souls alone

He gave me a smile, I returned it in kind
Though one living, one not, we were of the same mind

As I saw tears a-forming from tired old lids
I held my wife close, and we thought of our kids

For this task to be done wasn’t for here and now
But for those to come after, so they would see how

We must always be wary and watchful and wise
For greed and corruption takes any disguise

And when given the chance, shapes the world to its wishes
But Wisconsin’s not open to those avaricious

Bob La Follette, he knew it, and now we do too
Though the task is historic, we must see it through

Then Bob gave me a nod, and the night closed around
As he slipped from my view, making nary a sound

But I heard him exclaim as he marched out of sight,
“Happy Recall to all! Never give up the fight!”
